"Might as well face it we're addicted to stuff"

I thought to talk about addiction a bit this morning and what I sense as its root cause. The changing chemistry of psychotrophs by chemists in our time has produced a plethora of variables which influence different regions of our brain's capacity for producing sensations. I first came across evidence and explanation of the processes by which this happens in common news articles during my initiation years between '69-71'. In those days there was never mention of much more than words like dangerous and mind-altering in common media threads but the 'underground current' would occasionally present some tidbit on the matter which those involved would greedily consume. Of course.......I would put this away in the 'storehouse' for reference as well.......to use at some future time to impress or debate with. In the mid-nineties I was given a copy of a book titled 'Psychedelic Shamanism' by author/researcher Jim DeKorne............which proved to hold considerable information regarding this matter and a volumne of other things as well. Mind you......most of the information in the book had to do with the traditions of psychotrophic plant based use by various shamanic cultures.

The difference in this period seems to be  from the chemical recognition now existing which has allowed different blends of the chemicals to create what is commonly referred to as 'designer drugs'. CRACK COCAINE  produced from cocaine is far more addictive than its source,  for example. Many young folks will not experiment with LSD but will with drugs like ECSTASY which research also states is far more emotionally addictive than its predecessor. Last but not least, is the newer version of SPEED which is still called METH or CRANK but is said to be chemically superior in its euphoria producing ability than its older form. With this I want to explore an idea I've had for some years concerning addictive personalities.

Addiction is seen as a physiological disorder and/or a psychological disorder created by everything from an imbalance of body chemistry, to childhood influences, to life-stress factors. Chemical dependency covers a wide range of subject matter and all the associative trends of debate.....yet....I wonder just how much the studies have included the simple fact that our culture is built on top of a materialistic world-view......which can easily produce addictive attitudes. Let me explain my thought. The fundamentals of most Spiritual view provide the idea that one is here on earth to earn one's way to a better resolve....a place beside an all-powerful knowledge-figure........where security and pleasantness will be forever granted. If this is not accomplished one is either sent back for repeated learning or, in some cases, condemned forever to some nether-world. This kind of thinking .....I believe.....is control methodology made up by folks who want authority over others.......because they are frightened by natural law. Safety in numbers, eh? What this kind of systemization does.....is allow for a more gregarious nature to influence one less assertive and create a support system of co-dependency.....a damned fine basis for addictive attitudes. As soon as leadership roles can be established......in this type of consensual thinking.........a class system is present and materialism can easily become an objective......and remember......safety in numbers......materialism.........can easily be an army of believers.

Once the system becomes materialistic.....which is necessary to gain its agenda........time and consistency become its main theatre as it moves to expand and thus support itself.  As  industry-trade.......began to create another social class some 10,000 years ago........moving steadily forward ...... the earth needed communication to morph between cultural anomalies in order to continue expanding industry-trade routes worldwide. That is just what happened and when one looks at the beginnings of religions from early tribal stories written down and organized into prose and poetry......like Vedic literature and the array of written histories surrounding the Mediterranean cultures......it is easy to see why we've slowly adopted a greater co-dependency with materialism. Materialism becomes the "proof extant" societies use to validate and certify their existance.

With our materialistic belief systems comes an increasing array of associated addictions and that brings me to the current state of affairs. The youth of today have become addicted to the idea that they all deserve instant gratification through the speed of technology and communication. Its like those popular ideas of past-lives where everyone sees themself as a person of greater standing in a former life but rarely as Joe-Average or some disgusting lesser self-image. And we........the parents of the younger generations classically remove ourselves from fault in continually perpetuating this mythology of ego.......the very nature of co-dependent belief.  The harsh reality kicks in when kids begin sensing there is a big fat lie underneath the surface of our 'garden variety society' and this.....in my thinking......is the major contributing fact to the ease of addiction in all its forms.

Organized belief-systems..........have been the driving force which populated the planet to current extremes.....another perfect example of what I term....... 'foundational co-dependent addiction'......and if the current spiritual examples are correct......then pollution, degradation, social addiction, and all related hardship is the real result of man-inspired organization........not a "better future" we so love to project.

Lots that makes sense in this post for me Wolfie. You make me think of all our/my faults and where they come from and where they lead.

I'm glad you're still contributing to the collective Dennis! - this post tied together some loose ends in my own thinking on these subjects.

The addiction that the modern individual has for society and technology has clearly been a long work in progress. It's a fascinating connection to see how this addiction sets us up for lifestyles of dependence and addition. I think you can continue this thesis back further to evolutionary jump that primates made that rendered our babies dependent on mother and group for longer periods of time. In a sense we've evolved ourselves from dependance on mother to dependence on society/community/technology.

With that said, I think you could look at this on the flip side, and see a correlation between our increasing depth of collective ability and knowledge, and the decrease in our ability to survive as an individual. While that thought might cast a brighter light on this subject, it's a scary thought because it means that we're becoming increasingly unable to manage ourselves as individual, thus placing more importance on the control system to keep things in order.....

At times like this I can't help but think of the Borg on Star Trek; welcomed elimination of the individual mind and complete embrace of the collective....

Lin....that is because you are ready to look with "open eyes" at the 'image' of self you've created to try to learn a different perspective of self-honesty.

Matt....your 'connections' always remind me of myself.....for they are undaunted by a 'false ego' and immediately relate to a correlating opposite.

If we are but 'each other' and separated only by the illusion of time/space, Matt.........then there is truly NOTHING to fear because it would indicate the self/soul has the ability to splinter, create worlds, and experience infinity in an infinite arrangement.

Thanks grasshopper....for posting such a thoughtful response.
